At Mt Pocono United Methodist Church, we have a simple hope: to see people come to know Jesus Christ and grow in their Christian faith. For 10 years, we've been helping spread God's good news here in our hometown and throughout the world, and we pray that God will continue to use our congregation. Whether you've been attending church for years or haven't stepped into a sanctuary in decades, we hope you'll come and join us Sunday if you're looking for a church in our hometown.
History of Mt. Pocono United Methodist Church
In 1883, a few early settlers of the village of Forks and the surrounding area felt the need for Christian worship and formed a small Sunday School. Then in 1886, the first portion of the present site was acquired from Lewis T. Smith, one of the initial trustees.
On May 24, 1911, an evening prayer meeting was scheduled, but just prior to the appointed hour, a heavy storm hit the area. The church was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. The Easton Express gave this account, ” Mt. Pocono Methodist Church was destroyed by fire. Rev. George Schaeffer, pastor and Andrew Sebring, sexton, were in the church waiting for members to arrive when a bolt of lightning struck the building. The pastor and sexton saved the organ and piano. the loss was $5,000.” Determined to rebuild, the members recovered the bell that hung in the steeple from among the ruins, had it melted down and cast into a lot of hand- held bells. These bells were given to those families who pledged support to the reconstruction.
On April 30th, 1979 fire broke out in the ceiling area over the chancel. The sanctuary and rooms below were destroyed by fire and water damage.
After many ups and downs over the many years of being a pillar of the community, Mt Pocono UMC is still active and standing for the community it serves.
